At the Carlton Inn, we take local sourcing to a whole different level. With farming and butchery in the family, every ingredient we use really does come from close to home.

Our family at the Carlton Inn

Catherine and James get on like a house on fire. As friends and business partners, they make a great pair looking after visitors at the Carlton Inn.

Cath’s come a long way since pot-washing age 14 at the Anchor Inn in Whixley. Before joining the team at the Carlton Inn, Cath spent 6 months working in the kitchens at Rudding Park. With her work ethic is wasn’t long before she became Restaurant Manager.

James on the other hand, has had a rather more exotic journey to his current role. Working his way up from a job in the Hilton, he became Head Chef at Headingly stadium. Cooking up a feast for thousands on test match days certainly prepared him well for the Carlton Inn’s peak periods! After a stint on a Caribbean cruise ship, he returned to his Yorkshire roots at the Anchor Inn in Whixley and eventually the Carlton Inn.

With Cath front of house and James in the kitchen, the pair are delighted to continue the good work done by previous landlords, Jason and Anne Marie. Supporting them along the way is James’ wife, Connie, who brings her extensive experience in the hospitality industry. She’s a full-time Deputy Care Home Manager, but when it comes to events, planning and even busy Sundays at the Inn, she’s always on hand to help. Together, our team are known for their friendly and consistently attentive service.

Our family at Tancred Farm Shop

Tancred Farm Shop is known amongst residents of Whixley and the surrounding area as a superb quality farm shop selling their very own bred and butchered meat. Imagine how proud we are that Tancred is owned by our Cath’s mum and dad! And if that wasn’t enough, Cath’s brother Lewis, dad Dean and granddad Frank also run Tancred Field Farm. Having our suppliers in the family means the food that we serve at the Carlton Inn really couldn’t be more local.

About The Carlton Inn

Among our supplies from Tancred Farm Shop are top quality beef, lamb, pork, seasonal game, chicken, turkey and a whole host of other meat products. We also prepare dishes with their fruit, vegetables, honey and rapeseed oil from the farm. For other ingredients, we turn to Bracken Hill Foods in Elvington and Dancing Goat Coffee in Tockwith- both trusted Yorkshire suppliers.

Cath’s family do a fantastic job looking after their animals. They keep a herd of pedigree Lincoln red cattle as well as sheep and pigs. After a happy life at Tancred Field Farm, the animals are butchered, matured and cut to size by the farm shop team. From there, we bring the incredible meat to our guests at the Carlton Inn as part of famously tasty recipes.
